On the occasion of Women’s Day I decided to write about INCONTINENCE- Its definition, causes, types & Physiotherapy treatment.

Firstly what is Incontinence & how to identify it?
·         Involuntary loss of urine which is a social or hygiene problem is defined as Incontinence.
So, simply when passage of urine occurs without one’s control leading to social/hygienic problems is called as Incontinence.

How common is the problem:
·         It is a very common problem seen in the old age group of society & mostly occurs in women.
·         One must remember that its severity increases with age & so commonly seen in old people.

Causes:
·         Gender : Female
·         Older Age
·         Child birth
·         Menopause
·         Chronic Straining for stools
·         Neurological Dysfunction
·         Urinary Tract Infection etc.

Types of Incontinence:
·         STRESS : Urine passes on activities like coughing or laughing or sneezing
·         URGE: Uncontrollable urge to pass urine.

Treatment:
·         Consult your Physiotherapist for Incontinence Management. After thorough & careful examination, exercises which are very simple to understand & perform will be explained to the patient.

·         Program will vary from patient to patient according to the condition.
MESSAGE TO READERS:
·         TALK ABOUT IT!!  YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!
·         SOMETHING CAN BE DONE!!
·         SMALL PROBLEMS DESERVE CARE & ATTENTION TOO!!
·         VISIT YOUR PHYSIOTHERAPIST TODAY!!

One must remember, Incontinence should not be viewed as inevitable or shameful but should be viewed as something which is “Treatable”.
